Originally called the 500E from 1989-1993 and rebadged E500 for 1994, the German super saloon was developed in conjunction with Porsche at a time when Mercedes-Benz was preoccupied with other parts of the development project including the powerplant. Porsche was responsible for engineering the chassis, suspension, and drivetrain to fit the MB V-8 engine, receiving parts to help complete the project in Zuffenhausen and then shipping the completed chassis’ back to Mercedes-Benz for final assembly. The Benz-Porsche 500 series was characterized by large fender flares, revised air dams, and fresh side skirts. It was also lowered and had a wider track than regular E-class cars. Around 1,500 made it to US shores. Valuations remain high as a collector car from the 1990s.
