The 150hp Turbocharged 4-cylinder in the GLX Turbo was a fan favorite among VW groupies. The powerplant was a nice sweet spot between the cute but somewhat lethargic base models (such as the TDI) and the Turbo S and limited edition RSi with Subaru WRX-competing power and performance. The RSis were hard to come by and the Turbo S was a little too much of a budget stretch for some first-time new car buyers. From the outside, there’s not much to differentiate most New Beetles, making them hard to distinguish from one another for those unfamiliar with the brand. But that’s part of the charm of owning a VW — those who know — know.
